Today is Paddington Bear's birthday; he is...ahem...50 years old. (Well 50 years since he was created. He really celebrates two birthday's just like the Queen. But you probably know all this since I assume you have read the book.)
I have loved this book since I was a little girl. Something about a bear who wears an overcoat and comes from Deepest, Darkest Peru has always appealed to me. And to this day when I read the story, I can get a small tear in my eye, when I think about a poor orphaned bear sitting in Paddington Station with a sign around his neck that reads - “Please Look After This Bear. Thank You.”
When I was in England a few years ago, there were many things that I wanted to do and see. MANY. But high on my list, nestled between Westminster Abbey and the West End, was a trip to Paddington Station to see this statue. Unfortunately I did not get a picture though, so I had to "borrow" this one from Wikipedia. I think that is a good enough reason to go back to England someday don't you?Well I would say let's all join in a celebratory toast of marmalade to dear Paddington, but I don't like Marmalade. That leaves more for Paddington I guess.
Stay tuned for an episode of favorite things highlighting my favorite children's books. Paddington has inspired me, and as much as I love him, his is not my favorite story. Top Ten for sure, maybe even Top Five...but not my favorite.

I love Paddington too and I just realized I don't have a Paddington book. I'll have to get one so that Delaney doesn't miss out on the joys of Paddington.
And this is totally random but Paddington always makes me think of my Mom. They have the same intials and when ever I see the P.B. on his suitcase I think of her. And my Mom likes Paddington too because of that! I think she has a little stuffed one carrying a suitcase somewhere around the house that she bought just for herself.
PS I'm still looking forward to your election/go out and vote post. I'm totally interested in what you have to say!
I had to come back and double check the comment I left you this morning just to see if it made sense. My Dr. gave me Xanax to take for the first time before I get on the plane for Hawaii and he told me to take one in the evening a day or two before I leave for my trip. So this morning I felt like I had to come back in check in case I left a message sounding like some drunk weirdo. :)
Hi Melissa,
I also just realized that I don't have a Paddington Book. I bought several when I was in England but I guess I gave them all away. I think one to your Mom in fact. So you can probably borrow hers.
The election post is going to have to wait, I have come down with a nasty cold, so I am not in my right mind right now. But it will be posted this week sometime.
And speaking of Xanax. I also have a prescription for when I fly, and I love that stuff. But I actually don't use it anymore when I fly. I have sort of learned to calm myself down somehow. Probably because I fly alot more these days, so I am getting used to it or something. But I completely understand the desire to have some when flying. Maybe we both inherited the flying fear from Dad.
You sounded completely coherent by the way!
Love Heather
This is a special blog. Happy Birthday Paddington! Heather, get feeling better. Let me know if I can get anything for you.
I hope you feel better too!
I'm glad to know you have taken Xanax too. I was worried it would make me feel all crazy but it wasn't that bad. But then again I woke up wondering if I was really crazy and didn't realize it and that's why I felt like I had to double check the comment I left on your blog.
I grew up with Paddington, they even had a 5 minute cartoon each day when I was a kid; my mind has it as going on for years but it was probably only a season and they just repeated. I love him, which is probably why the nursery will have a PB theme, and I love marmalade sandwiches ;)
Another excuse to go back to England: you didn't stop in Manchester!! lol
I have no idea what Xanax is but I don't have a fear of flying - a sickness when I think of having to deal with all the added security these days but no fear.
I hope your Top Ten Children's Books includes Peter Rabbit!!
I also hope you feel good by now for two reasons: 1) because feeling ill is the pits, 2) because I too want to read your election comments :D
Alethea, I remember that cartoon, they played it over here as well. During Electric Company or some show like that.
And of course it includes Peter Rabbit. But that's all I am going to leak, must wait for the big reveal. :)
How's your trip?
Ah, Paddington! I wanted so much to like marmalade because he did, but it was no good.
Even though it has been forever since I've commented on your posts, I've been regularly checking the blog on my Palm when I've had free moments. I miss you very much and hope that you're having a lovely very late summer. Have you recovered from your sickness? I hope it wasn't too serious.
Lots of love from David, the monkeys, and me!
